Every country, state, and town has its own urban legends known to residents and fans of the paranormal. Some are clear attempts to explain mysterious phenomena or tragedies, while others are passed down due to humans’ fascination with the dark and macabre.
Some areas have capitalized on local urban legends to attract tourists and boost local economies. In the West Virginia city of Point Pleasant, for example, the legend of Mothman is integral to the community. The Mothman Festival is held every September and includes guest speakers, a street fair, bus tours, live music, food trucks, and more. There’s even a Mothman museum.
It’s not for nothing. The Main Street Point Pleasant organization told The River Cities Tribune & Register that it estimates the festival brings about $2 million to the city’s economy every year.
