It’s been 10 years since the Official Charts Company in the U.K. began specifically tracking vinyl sales, and to mark the anniversary, the organization has unveiled a handful of decade-spanning rankings. Vinyl, of course, was the dominant music format for generations, but eventually, wax records all but disappeared. For a time, many thought the format was gone for good. But in the past several years, vinyl has staged an impressive comeback, growing in popularity with collectors, superfans, and casual listeners alike.
In 2015, the company behind all things charts in the U.K. launched the vinyl rankings, aimed at both songs and albums. As those lists turn 10, exciting data has been made public that highlights what’s been selling the best over the past decade. On the list of the bestselling vinyl singles of the past 10 years, one very familiar name rises to the top.
The Beatles Lead the U.K. Vinyl Sales Ranking
The bestselling vinyl single of the past 10 years in the U.K. isn’t a classic from the 1960s or a modern-day reissue. It’s a brand new cut from one of the biggest bands of all time. “Now and Then” by The Beatles comes in at No. 1 on the decade-spanning ranking.
The tune has sold 35,000 copies on vinyl alone since it was released, according to the Official Charts Company. Impressively, when it arrived in late 2023, it moved more than 19,000 copies on wax in just its initial tracking frame. That means well over half of its total sales to date were earned in a single week.
The Beatles Reunited (Sort Of) for “Now and Then”
“Now and Then” was unveiled in November 2023 and billed as The Beatles’ final single. The track was created using old recordings from John Lennon and George Harrison, and thanks to modern artificial intelligence technology, surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were able to add their contributions and complete the cut. The end result was a new Beatles song, decades after the group had disbanded.
The composition quickly became an immediate success. “Now and Then” debuted at No. 1 in the U.K., giving The Beatles an eighteenth chart-topper in the band’s home country. While expectations were high, it still came as a bit of a surprise to see just how well the song sold.
“Now and Then” is Still Charting
More than a year after it dropped, “Now and Then” continues to appear on two U.K. rankings. This week, it jumps back onto the Official Vinyl Singles chart, where it lands at No. 31.
At the same time, “Now and Then” bolts up the Official Physical Singles chart, which combines all formats of purchasable singles. The tune lifts from No. 61 to No. 28, thanks largely to consistent demand for the wax version.
