Taylor Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department has only been out for a few days, but the title is already the bestselling project so far this year in America. As her latest set sells incredible sums, Swift beats Beyoncé’s record–and it wasn’t even close.
The Tortured Poets Department needed only a few hours before it became the bestselling album of 2024 in the U.S. According to Billboard, Swift’s latest sold 1.4 million copies in just its first full day of availability.
Swift’s new project is the first album to sell at least one million copies so far this year–and that’s looking at pure purchases. The title blows past Beyoncé’s previously-set record for the bestselling project of 2024 in America.
Before The Tortured Poets Department arrived, Beyoncé’s latest album Cowboy Carter ranked as the bestselling full-length in the country this year. Billboard notes that the country effort had sold 188,000 actual copies between its release in late March and April 11.
The Tortured Poets Department didn’t just pass Cowboy Carter, though–it completely demolished that album’s record. Swift’s full-length outsold the bestselling album in America this year seven times over–in just one day.
So far, The Tortured Poets Department has shifted a total of 1.6 million equivalent units, including sales and streaming units. That sum is also as of just the project’s first day of availability (Friday, April 19).
By the time the first full tracking week has passed, The Tortured Poets Department may become Swift’s first album to move two million equivalent units in a single frame. That will mark a new best showing for the singer-songwriter if it reaches that impressive sum.
The Tortured Poets Department is already headed right for the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, among other Billboard charts. The set still has half of its first tracking frame in which to rack up streams and sales before a final number is reported. By the time 2025 rolls around, there’s a good chance that Swift’s latest will still hold the title of the bestseller of the year.
