Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti demanded that Vinicius Jr. learns to handle pressure better following Saturday’s 4-2 win over Osasuna.
Simultaneously, however, he also tipped the winger to do so because he is a “humble, serious and intelligent” individual who played an “extraordinary” game in El Sadar.
AS took this as Ancelotti being “critical of his attitude” but “affectionate” about Vinicius as a person.
Whatever your opinion, there is no doubting that Vinicius was again fantastic with the ball and netted two goals that will help his team go into the international break at least seven points clear at the top of La Liga.
Once more, though, his afternoon couldn’t pass without controversy and he was booked in the first half to receive his fourth consecutive yellow card.
Post-match, Ancelotti was asked to explain Vinicius’ “two faces”.
“We are talking about an enormously decisive player, who has scored two today. And even with that, he always wants more,” Ancelotti said in his post-match press conference.
“He was effective in all the plays he made, with the ball and without it.”
Even so, Ancelotti accepted that the 23-year-old should “control himself a little better” and handle the pressure he receives during matches, or rather his reaction to it.
When asked to expand on this further, Ancelotti added: “He is a very dangerous player, we all know that.
“The oppositon fans whistle at him, the opposing players kick him many times, although today I think that they were correct. Many, but within the rules.
“In this facet he can improve and will improve, because he is humble, serious and intelligent,” Ancelotti predicted.
When asked to reveal what he said in Vinicius’ ear, Ancelotti answered: “Nothing special. I congratulated him, because he played an extraordinary game, moving very well, generating danger…
“That is where he has improved the most, because with the ball he has always been great. But now he is being spectacular without it. He is very fast and moves with good time.”
Later in the mixed zone to Real Madrid TV, Ancelotti noted that his number 7 “was extraordinary in all situations”.
“Accurate, cool in front of goal, very good. He played a spectacular game and we need a player like that,” Ancelotti stressed.
