Boston Red Sox left-handed hitting Roman Anthony is the highest ranked prospect outfielder in the MLB.com rankings.
Anthony, 20, is also the Red Sox highest rated prospect.
Anthony has not yet made his major league debut.
At 6-3, 200 pounds, Anthony has an ideal frame for a professional baseball player.
About Roman Anthony:
The Red Sox selected Anthony as a Supplemental 2nd round pick in the 2022 Major League Baseball draft.
As the No. 79 player taken in the draft, the Red Sox gave Anthony a $2.5 million signing bonus..
Scouts were concerned a bit by his swing and misses during his high school and showcase days, and that may have caused his drop in the draft class.
Anthony’s signing bonus was the highest of the entire second round, including the Supplemental portion, with one exception. The Cubs gave pitcher Jackson Ferris $3.005 million. Ferris, was chosen at slot #47.
Chosen out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Anthony has flown through his minor league development.
Following his sophomore year in high school, Anthony committed to playing baseball at the University of Mississippi. Of course, his signing with the Red Sox eliminated that commitment.
Anthony displayed his enormous power in the summer prior to his senior year in high school, when he hit a 450-foot home run in the High School All American Game at Coors Field.
Without question, power is Anthony’s greatest calling card.
Anthony is considered by Baseball America to be the best power hitter in the entire Red Sox organization, including their major league club. That’s saying something.
Anthony consistently flashed power in his high school days, hitting 10 home runs, and driving in 40 runs as a senior. He hit .520 that year, with 52 hits.
Anthony’s efforts earned him the Gatorade Florida Player of the Year and Mr. Florida Baseball awards.
Roman Anthony has cleaned up his swing-and-miss issues to a great degree, and he is now a feared power hitter with tremendous bat speed.
Using good swing decisions, Anthony can put a dent in the baseball with his over-the-top hard contact.
In his 2024 season, Anthony’s exit velocity of 109 miles per hour landed him in the top 90th percentile of hitters. He hit a home run with a 116-miles per hour exit velocity at Double-A Portland last season.
Basically a pull hitter, Anthony can still benefit by getting more loft on the ball. However, even his line drives have enough length and depth to clear any park. Putting the ball in the air more consistently is a factor Red Sox brass have worked on with Anthony.
There is no timetable for Anthony’s graduation to the parent club. But he’s knocking on the big league clubhouse door.
If he continues to make good contact, Anthony should be able to hit for average at the major league level. However, there will be the usual adjustments to how pitchers work him. He is a smart enough hitter to adapt and adjust quickly.
Defensively, Anthony has a strong and accurate arm, but he is probably an average defender. He could be comfortable playing either corner outfield position.
Not a speedster, Anthony has the ability to steal bases, and like his overall hitting tool, his base stealing will be refined with experience and knowledge of the pitchers.
Scouting Grade: 60
As of May 5 at Triple-A Worcester, Anthony was hitting .305/.419/.514/.933, with five doubles, one triple, 5 homers, and 17 RBIs in 129 plate appearances, covering 29 games.
For this old scout, Roman Anthony has a very good chance to be an All Star, Grade 60 outfielder for the Red Sox.
With power being his greatest tool, Anthony should be successful in the middle of the Red Sox lineup, which will give him plenty of RBI opportunities.
A consequential presence, Anthony’s emerging hit tool is his second most complete baseball skill. However, average remaining tools make keep him from being an elite big league player.
But very, very good may be sufficient for a Red Sox team that always looks for power.
Once he graduates to the big leagues, Roman Anthony should have a lengthy, successful career in the Red Sox outfield for years to come.
