Christian Bale’s Batman action figure is getting company with a Morgan Freeman figure from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
McFarlane Toys put an action figure of Freeman’s Lucius Fox up for pre-order Friday on its website. It marks the first time between McFarlane and previous Batman movie licensee Mattel that an action figure of Freeman’s venerable character has been produced.
Getting Freeman’s 7-inch scale figure of Lucius comes with a catch, however. It’s a part of a set exclusive to McFarlane Toys that also includes Bruce Wayne/Batman’s Batmobile, aka Tumbler. Together, the Lucius Fox figure and Tumbler “Gold Label” DC Multiverse set retails for $99.99 and will ship to buyers in July.
Before Freeman’s Lucius action figure, either McFarlane and/or Mattel has produced nearly every principal character featured in Nolan’s three Batman movies, including Batman/Bruce Wayne (Bale), Ra’s al Ghul (Liam Neeson), the Joker (Heath Ledger), Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart) and Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman).
Other Dark Knight Trilogy figures produced either by McFarlane and/or Mattel include Catwoman/Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine), Bane (Tom Hardy), Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) and Officer John Blake (Joseph-Gordon Levitt).
How Important Is Lucius Fox To The Dark Knight Trilogy?
Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox is an integral character who helps out Christian Bale’s Batman/Bruce Wayne in all three of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies.
A friend of Bruce’s late father, Thomas Wayne, Lucius is the head of research at Wayne Enterprises and helps the younger Wayne develop his Batsuit, vehicles and several miscellaneous gadgets. Essentially, Lucius is to Bruce what Q is to James Bond.
In addition to the Lucius figure and the Tumbler in the new McFarlane action figure and vehicle set, Lucius comes equipped with a small case of gadgets.
In addition to Batman’s Tumbler from The Dark Knight, McFarlane produced a camouflage version of the vehicle used by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. That vehicle—which does not come with an action figure—is an Amazon exclusive that retails for $69.99.
Action figures, of course, are a pivotal part of superhero movie marketing as they often accompany both DC and Marvel film releases. The Dark Knight trilogy releases are far different and are more collector-focused since the last movie of the three—The Dark Knight Rises—was released in 2012.
Speaking of movie marketing, legendary action star Arnold Schwarzenegger turned to both 5 ½ inch and 22-foot-tall action figures of his FUBAR character Luke Brunner to help promote the Netflix series’ second season.
