Secret Service agents escorted former President Donald Trump off the stage of his Saturday campaign rally after loud pops that sounded like gunshots rang out from the crowd.
Video of the rally, held in Pennsylvania, shows Trump ducking and appearing to move his hand near his face. Agents can be seen running to cover him.
Images online also show the former President with blood on his face. He can be seen defiantly raising his fist before being whisked off stage by Secret Service agents.
“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” a Trump spokesman said, according to The New York Times reporter Michael Gold. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”
NBC News correspondent Darren Botelho reported security at the event could be heard saying, “The shooter is down,” following the incident.
Representatives for Trump, the Secret Service, and the Butler Township Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
A pool report indicates President Joe Biden has received an initial briefing on the incident at former President Trump’s rally, though the White House did not respond to a request for comment from BI.
