Over a week ago Emmanuel Macron’s team attempted to show how ‘close’ he is to the people and the ‘terre’ by arranging a set piece meeting with up to thirty farmer’s groups at the Salon de l’Agriculture. However, there were two problems. Only a couple of those groups turned up, and another protest group stormed the pavilion where Macron was holding forth, leading to an enormous scrummage with riot police. In the context of a country where to paraphrase Charles de Gaulle, it is near impossible to govern any country that produces 258 cheeses, there is an important link between…

Yesterday was the 1,000th Wordle and the New York Times did a bunch of fun stuff to celebrate. The Empire State Building lit up with Wordle colors. There were free bagels from Tompkins Square Bagels. They had sales on New York Times best-sellers and a whole bunch of other stuff. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one excited for it! I also stumbled on this funny comic: But now the day has come and gone, and it will be over two years from now when we reach Wordle #2000. I can’t help but feel a little blue, kind of like…
Another wintry weekend here in the mountains—and so close to spring! Of course, what that means is that it’s a perfect weekend for curling up with a good book, firing up a video game, sitting down at a table to play board games or D&D or—and more to the point for this guide—watch a new show or movie! See my streaming guide from last weekend here. If you’re in sunnier climes, you might be less inclined to Netflix and chill, so go hit the dusty trail, get your sweat on (I did hot yoga and sweat more than I thought…
As the grueling, four-month battle for the industrial city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine culminated in mid-February, the Russian armed forces—which up to that point mostly had relied on glide-bombs, artillery and infantry-first “meat assaults” to soften the Ukrainian garrison—tried something different. They rolled a ZS-88 psychological-operations vehicle toward the ruined city and broadcast a message to the exhausted Ukrainians, presumably from the 110th Mechanized Brigade. “There is no point in resisting,” was the message from the loudspeakers on the ZS-88, a variant of the wheeled BTR-80 fighting vehicle. “Your fathers and grandfathers didn’t fight for the power of neo-Nazis…
By Marianna Parraga HOUSTON/MIAMI (Reuters) -The highest bid received in a U.S. auction of shares that will decide the fate of Venezuela-owned oil refiner Citgo Petroleum was $7.3 billion, enough to cover only a third of court-approved claims, two people familiar with the matter said. A federal court in Delaware is auctioning the shares of a parent of Venezuela’s foreign crown jewel, Houston-based Citgo, that it found liable for the South American country’s debt defaults and expropriations. Creditors have flocked to Delaware to press claims totaling $21.3 billion in a case first brought nearly seven years ago by miner Crystallex.…
The entire US housing market is about to get remodeled, and the end product could come with a big perk: cheaper home prices. That’s due to a $418 million settlement the National Association of Realtors announced Friday with groups of homesellers. The settlement, which is still subject to a judge’s approval, will eliminate the long-standing standard 6% commission paid by the seller. Those fees, however, are often baked into the listed price of the home. Lower commissions could therefore lower home prices, experts say. And at a time when elevated housing costs are driving inflation across the country, reining in…
Gold retreats from the $2,180 mark, reacting to hot US inflation data and Fed’s cautious stance on policy easing. Rise in US Treasury yields post-PPI data release dampens XAU/USD’s appeal despite risk-off market sentiment. Gold remains subdued as Treasury yields inch higher and the US Dollar strengthens. Gold spot retreated from around the $2,180 area on Friday, printing back-to-back negative sessions as market players’ hope for the beginning of the US Federal Reserve’s easing cycle has been delayed due to strong US economic data. Hotter-than-expected inflation figures justify Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks to be patient and stick to the…
