Fashion’s biggest night is finally here. The annual Met Gala will see some of the world’s biggest celebrities walk the iconic stairs in support of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Read on to learn the Met Gala start time and how to watch your favorites on the red carpet.
The 2025 Met Gala is an annual charity event and fundraiser for The Met’s Costume Institute, usually timed to the opening of the department’s annual fashion exhibition, which will be on view from May 10 to October 26. The corresponding exhibition was led by Costume Institute Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton and guest curator Monica Miller, who is the professor and chair of Africana Studies at Barnard College.
The theme for 2025 is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which will “explore the role of sartorial style in forming Black identities, focusing on the emergence, significance, and proliferation of the Black dandy,” according to Vogue. It was inspired by Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, according to a press release.
As for the dress code, this year it will be “tailored for you,” which is a tribute to the exhibition’s focus on menswear. The dress code is “purposefully designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation,” per Vogue. It’s also the first Costume Institute exhibition to focus exclusively on menswear since 2003’s “Men in Skirts.”
