  • Trump on Monday threatened China with extra tariffs of 50%.
  • Trump last week hit China with a 34% tariff rate, in addition to 20% tariffs imposed earlier.
  • China retaliated by imposing a 34% rate of its own on US goods, drawing Trump’s ire.

President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to slap an additional 50% tariff on China, in what is a major intensification toward Beijing days after the administration’s “Liberation Day” rollout last week.

“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

“Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!” he added.

Trump also said that tariff negotiations with other nations would commence “immediately.”

After Trump announced last week that he would put forward an additional 34% reciprocal tariff on Chinese goods, China retaliated and said it would implement its own 34% tariff on US goods.

This development comes after Trump in recent months had already imposed 20% tariffs on China over concerns about fentanyl coming into the US.
