Apple’s AI features have finally been launched — but is your device powerful enough to access them?
Apple Intelligence, Apple’s suite of AI features, began rolling out on Monday with the latest iOS 18.1 software update. With the upgrade, AI will be integrated throughout devices in features that include AI writing tools, summaries and smart replies, an updated Photos app, and a smarter Siri.
Many Apple products won’t have access to this, however. While the new software is officially available on iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, and users can access parts of the intelligence system in US English as of Monday, only certain new iPhones can support AI, for example.
If you don’t have a brand-new Apple device, you might still be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence. Here’s a breakdown of which devices will be able to access Apple’s new offerings:
All iPhone 16s, some iPhone 15 models
Apple says on its website that Apple Intelligence is available in beta on all iPhone 16 models, which includes the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. You can also access Apple Intelligence features on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
iPhone owners who upgrade to iOS 18.1 can join a waitlist found in the Settings app to activate AI.
Users with an iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15, and any version below cannot access Apple Intelligence features.
iPads with M-series or A17 Pro Chip
iPads with any M-series or A17 Pro Chip can also access some of the first features, according to Apple’s website. That includes the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and the iPad mini.
Those with a standard iPad will not have access to the Apple Intelligence features. Additionally, any version before the 5th generation of the iPad Pro and iPad Air doesn’t support them. Any iPad Mini model besides the A17 Pro also does not support Apple Intelligence.
Macs with M1 chips and later
Macs with an M1 chip and later can access Apple Intelligence features with the macOS Sequoia 15.1 update. That includes versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. It also includes desktop versions of the iMac, and Mac Mini. Apple’s display computers, including Mac Studio, which uses an M1 Max and later, and Mac Pro, which uses an M2 Ultra chip, can access the new features.
