After much deliberation, we have chosen our favorite folding smartphone of 2023 which takes home the 01net Award in its category. The choice was not easy, but it was necessary to decide.

The days when there were only two folding smartphones on the market seem long gone. Many manufacturers are now offering their vision of this format which in 2023 has been very well represented. Honor, Samsung, Motorola or even OnePlus, there is no shortage of choice, both in terms of format and price. But if there were only one left, it would be this one.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is our favorite folding smartphone of 2023

It may not be the most original or the cheapest, but it is undoubtedly the most complete. Year after year, Samsung refines its formula, offering in 2023 a “mature” folding smartphone that can easily be recommended to as many people as possible.

From its successful design to its quality screens and excellent performance, the Z Flip 5 ticks a lot of boxes. We also appreciated its IPX8 certification and the promise of four years of Android updates which give it good durability.

The camera has changed little since the Galaxy Z Flip 4, but it remains solid nonetheless. Certainly, for the same price, you will have a “non-folding” smartphone offering more things (like a telephoto lens for example), but the style of the Z Flip 5 and its compact format once folded still have their effect.

Two folding formats and lots of choice

If you are looking for a smartphone with the same format as that of the Z Flip 5, but your budget is less, we recommend the Motorola Razr 40 which also caught our eye this year. Its big brother, the Razr 40 Ultra, was also a pioneer in terms of XXL external screens.

If you have large pockets, you can turn to the “book” format of large folding smartphones. In this category, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 obviously remains a solid reference, but it faced serious competition at the end of the year from the OnePlus Open.
