Rafael Nadal announced on Wednesday that he will not play the U.S. Open, but plans to play the Laver Cup in Berlin Sept. 20-22.
It is possible that the Laver Cup will be the final event of the 38-year-old tennis legend’s career — just as it was for his longtime rival and friend Roger Federer in 2022.
“Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open, a place where I have amazing memories,” Nadal, a four-time U.S. Open champion, wrote. “I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100 per cent this time.
“Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of luck to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.”
Nadal, a part of Team Europe in the Laver Cup, will compete alongside Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The 22-time Grand Slam singles champion has dealt with numerous injuries in recent years and lost in the quarterfinals in doubles in the Paris Olympics with partner Carlos Alcaraz and then said he would address his future plans at a later date.
“I will go to spend time with my family after four months in which I enjoyed tennis again, despite some problems and disappointments,” he said. “When I am clear about what I will do in the future with or without a racket in my hand, I will let you know. If I don’t have the desire, strength, or motivation to continue, I will hang up my racket.”
Nadal has more than $510 million in pre-tax earnings.
