The Green Bay Packers’ safety room is a lot more crowded that it was 24 hours ago.

The Packers selected Oregon safety Evan Williams in the fourth round of Saturday’s NFL Draft. Green Bay traded its original fourth round pick (No. 126) and a sixth rounder (190) to the New York Jets for their fourth rounder (No. 111).

On Friday, the Packers selected Georgia safety Javon Bullard in the second round.

Safety had been a problem area in 2023, but Green Bay has addressed that with the signing of free agent Xavier McKinney and the additions of Bullard and Williams.

Williams (6-1, 205) played four years at Fresno State, then transferred to Oregon for the 2023 season. He finished his college career with 309 tackles, four interceptions, 16.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

Williams is considered more of a box safety and plays with the mentality of a linebacker. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.60 seconds at the NFL Combine, posted a vertical jump of 40.5 inches and had a broad jump of 10’ 6”.

Williams has struggled in space, will have to improve his coverage skills and lacks the speed to make up ground.

Green Bay has now selected two linebackers, two safeties, one offensive lineman and a running back with its first six picks.
