Death of a Unicorn — a horror comedy starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd — is coming to digital streaming this week.

The logline for Death of a Unicorn reads, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard E. Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”

Rated R, Death of a Unicorn also stars Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, Steve Park and Anthony Carrigan. The film opened in theaters on March 28.

Death of a Unicorn is expected to debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, April 29, When to Stream reported. While When to Stream is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, the streaming tracker noted that Death of a Unicorn’s studio, A24, has not announced or confirmed the release date and it is subject to change.

Death of a Unicorn is currently listed for pre-order for $24.99 on Prime Video, which is also the film’s purchase price. Since digital rentals are typically $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent Death of a Unicorn for a 48-hour period for $19.99.

In addition to Prime Video, Death of a Unicorn will also be available to rent on such digital platforms as AppleTV and Fandango at Home.

‘Death Of A Unicorn’s’ Writer-Director Contacted Jenna Ortega About The Film Just Before Release Of ‘Wednesday’ Season 1

While Jenna Ortega’s star was already on the rise thanks to her work in Scream and Scream VI, her star rose dramatically with the debut of Wednesday Season 1 on Netflix in November 2022.

Death of a Unicorn writer-director Alex Scharfman told The Hollywood Reporter in March that he sent his script to Ortega the weekend before the debut of Wednesday Season 1.

When he and Ortega met, the filmmaker immediately knew she was the right person to play Ridley, whom he calls “the emotional center of the movie.”

“I don’t know what we would’ve done if we didn’t get Jenna. It’s such a hard role, and she does such an incredible job with it,” Sharfman told THR. “Aligning things with her schedule was not necessarily a challenge because it ended up working out relatively easily, but there’s always that dance of, “How can this happen?”

“But there was a really great vibe as of our first meeting, and she really got the character,” Scharfman added. “She also got what I was trying to do on a genre and story level, and she was just incredible as a collaborator and performer.”

Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, is expected to arrive on PVOD on Tuesday.
