April is an exciting month for TV shows and movies arriving on Max. From the Oscar-winning film The Zone of Interest to the second part of the true-crime doc The Jinx: Part Two, more than 80 titles are arriving throughout the month. Premiering on April 5 is The Zone of Interest, the Academy Award-winning historical drama loosely based on Martin Amis’s best-selling 2014 novel. The film stars Christian Friedel as German Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss, who tries to build his dream life with his wife, Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), in their affluent home next to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Friedel is at the center of the exterminating European Jews, and his family tries to ignore the sounds of screams, cries, gunshots, and atrocities taking place on the other side of the wall.
Also arriving on Max is HBO’s limited series The Sympathizer. Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel of the same name, the series is “espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over,” according to show’s logline. New episodes of The Sympathizer will be released on Sundays starting on April 14.
Another new title to look forward to is the second installment of the true-crime doc The Jinx—Part Two, which will air on April 21. Part two, which has six episodes, will continue the investigation from the Emmy-winning documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. Over eight years, the filmmakers uncovered hidden material, Durst’s prison calls, and new interviews with witnesses.
Max subscribers can also tune into Conan O’Brien Must Go on April 18, where the former late-night host travels to Thailand, Ireland, Norway, and Argentina to meet friends he’s made through his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan. In the show’s trailer, O’Brien is seen in Norway dressed as a Viking and shows other moments from his time abroad.
Other notable additions include the four-part documentary The Synanon Fix, which explores the rise and fall of a drug rehabilitation program that turned into a cult-like movement. There’s also the new HBO original documentary, Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion, about the popular teenage clothing store Brandy Melville and the store’s “one size fits most” tagline and other controversial practices.
