A number of escaped military horses — one seemingly covered in blood — were captured in London on Wednesday after they were seen bolting through the city center and sparked a dash among emergency services and the armed forces to recover them and treat the several people reportedly injured.

Key Facts

London’s Metropolitan Police and the British Army confirmed all loose horses running through London have been recovered, according to the BBC.

It is unclear how many horses escaped but two — one black and one white — sparked a stir online after they were photographed and filmed running through busy areas of the city, including the Strand and Tower Bridge, wearing bridles and saddles, with the white one apparently covered in blood.

Police only said a “number” were running through the city, according to news reports, and the Army confirmed the animals were “military working horses” who got loose during routine exercise.

News reports indicate the horses are Household Cavalry, a regiment of the British army, that threw their riders and bolted during morning exercise and the Telegraph reported at least five were seen charging through areas of London, including one covered in blood.

The London Ambulance Service said crews attended three incidents for horse-related injuries — at Buckingham Palace Road, Belgrave Square and the junction between Chancery Lane and Fleet Street — for incidents that happened between 8:25 a.m. and 8:35 a.m., with four patients treated at the scene and taken to hospital, according to the BBC.
