An FC Barcelona star announced what has turned out to be his surprise departure from the club after Chelsea confirmed his transfer on Monday evening in Spain.

Reports from the likes of Jijantes that seemed to come out of nowhere the weekend before last linked Marc Guiu with a shock move to Chelsea.

Barca was unable to reach a contract renewal agreement with the La Masia product, and the English club took advantage of this by activating his $6.4 million (€6 million) release clause.

On Monday, Chelsea announced the transfer which was followed by Guiu heading to social media and bidding farewell to his boyhood outfit.

“Cules, when I started my journey to Barca when I was only seven years old, I could not imagine the experiences I was going to live wearing the Barca shirt,” Guiu began, addressing the Catalans’ fans directly.

“It has been a spectacular 11 years, with many goals, triumphs and joys that have made me grow as a person and player.”

“Now it’s my turn to say see you later. This has been the most difficult decision of my life, I know it will not be easy, as nothing has been during my career, but I think it is the professional path I should choose.

“Barca will always be by my side, that feeling will not change no matter what. I hope that in the future our paths will come together again and that Barca can win many titles and can achieve many successes. From a distance I will celebrate like any other Culer,” Guiu vowed.

The 18-year-old then explained that he only has “words of gratitude for the club that has trained me”, and for this reason, he wanted to thank the “entire Barca family” for having “helped, taught and supported me so much” which included medical staff, teachers and taxi drivers.

“I will be supporting you from a distance. Now and always, Visca Barca!,” Guiu signed off.

To Chelsea, Guiu explained that for him and his grandfather “a move to the Premier League and a club like Chelsea was always the dream destination”.

He joins the west Londoners on a five-year deal, which will expire on June 30, 2029.
