FC Barcelona has renewed a La Masia pearl’s contract, as confirmed by an official statement sent out to the media on Thursday afternoon.

“FC Barcelona and the player Pau Cubarsi have reached an agreement for the renewal of his contract, which will bind him with the Club until June 30, 2027. The termination clause will be €500 million ($536.5 million),” the statement began.

“The Barcelona defender signed his new contract this Thursday morning in an event with the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta; the first vice president, Rafa Yuste; the manager responsible for Formative Football, Joan Soler; and the Club’s sports director, Anderson Luis de Souza “Deco”,” Barca added.

Along with that of his fellow academy graduate Lamine Yamal, Cubarsi’s breakout has been one of Barca’s few positive notes in a trophyless season to forget.

Debuting just before he turned 17, the youngster who has been at the club since 2018 when switching from Girona’s youth categories is now an established first team starter.

Beginning Barca’s 3-1 win over Napoli back in February, he was deemed the MVP of the last 16 second leg tie in his maiden Champions League outing after keeping Victor Osimhen quiet.

Cubarsi received further plaudits following his next outing in the tournament, a 3-2 away win in the quarterfinal first leg at Paris Saint-Germain where Kylian Mbappe’s impact was extremely limited.

In the return meeting, however, he could do little to prevent the Ligue 1 giants from winning 4-1 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate after his defensive partner Ronald Araujo was sent off as the last man.

Still the future looks bright for Barca’s back line, and getting Cubarsi to commit for another three years is an important achievement from Laporta and Deco.

Along with Lamine and Gavi, he is considered to be the future face of the club and is already an established Spain international alongside the two other mentioned teenagers.

This summer, Cubarsi is set to be included in the La Roja squad which will contest the Euros in Germany and could also star at the Paris Olympics if he doesn’t participate heavily in the former international tournament according to SPORT.
