James Gunn’s Superman is set to premiere in 2025, and now DC fans have the first look at Superman’s iconic costume. Keep reading to dive into all the details about the new Superman, from the release date to the cast.

Superman will be the first film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly revamped DC cinematic universe. “I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter for a cover story in April. “He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s fucking Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like.”

Initially, the film was titled Superman: Legacy, but in February, Gunn announced that he was shortening the name to just Superman. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he wrote in the caption. “Making our way to you July 2025.”

A week before the name change, Gunn posted the first cast photo of the Superman crew following a table read of the script in Atlanta. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan told Variety that the table read “was pretty amazing.” She continued, “Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud.”

The actress added that she’s always loved her character, Lois Lane. “She’s smart, ambitious and can be funny. She knows she’s the smartest person in the room more often than not. When the opportunity came on… I’m such a fan of James Gunn from a far… we’re still finding these characters,” she said. “We haven’t started shooting yet. You’ll meet the final version of them.”

When Is The New Superman Movie Coming Out?

DC Studios’ upcoming Superman film will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Who Is The New Superman?

David Corenswet will play the new Superman in the upcoming superhero film, which is written and directed by James Gunn and produced by Peter Safran.

On May 7, James Gunn, the CEO of DC Studios and the writer-director of Superman, unveiled the first photo of David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. In the image, Corenswet sports the classic blue suit with the “S” emblem on the chest, red boots, and a flowing red cape. “Get ready. #Superman 7.11.25,” Gunn captioned the Instagram photo.

The 30-year-old actor hails from Philadelphia and is best known for Netflix’s The Politician and Hollywood, as well as Look Both Ways, Pearl, and the HBO miniseries We Own This City. His upcoming projects include the Apple TV+ series Lady in the Lake and Universal Pictures’ Twisters.

The rest of the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

María Gabriela de Faría joins as the Engineer, along with Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent.

What Will The New Superman Movie Be About?

Although the plot for the upcoming Superman movie is under wraps, Gunn previously said on social media that the reboot will “focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life,” but is not an origin story.

“None,” the director replied on Threads to a fan who asked how much of the upcoming movie is dedicated to an origin story.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Superman “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

In a tweet, the studio head revealed that the upcoming film draws inspiration from Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman comic book series. The movie will introduce other superheroes, such as Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern, and will mark the debut of Angela Spica, The Engineer, a founding member of The Authority—Gunn’s second DCU film about a team of antiheroes called the anti-Justice League.
