A Boeing 737 Max collided with an airport vehicle on the runway as it accelerated for takeoff

A Boeing 737 Max was taking off when it collided with a vehicle on the runway.

The Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes plane was about to fly from Rio de Janeiro’s international airport to Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil on Tuesday.

A video posted on X appeared to show the jet accelerating down the runway when a loud noise can be heard.

The jet managed to brake before reaching the end of the runway. The airport has one of the world’s longest runways at 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet or 2.5 miles.)

In an air traffic control recording published by the Brazilian newspaper Globo, the pilots can be heard saying they had aborted the takeoff because a car was in the middle of the runway.

Other clips posted on social media appear to show emergency vehicles surrounding the 737 Max after the collision.

The airline said in a statement that the plane collided with an airport vehicle that was on the runway.

It added that all passengers and crew disembarked safely, with another flight added to Fortaleza for those who wanted to continue their journey.

No injuries were reported.

The airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Last month, a United Airlines plane was taking off from Chicago O’Hare Airport when it collided with a coyote on the runway, forcing it to turn back.

However, collisions with other planes have become more likely in recent years, with near misses becoming increasingly common.

In December, a Southwest Airlines plane was cleared to land on a runway that was already occupied by a smaller plane — but it managed to slow down in time for both aircraft to taxi away and park.
